Council of the Reiki Association

The composition of the Council of the Reiki Association usually changes each year as one or more members come to the end of their maximum allowed term on Council. Council members are normally elected at General Meetings held during gatherings and become directors of the company. Whilst reasonable expenses can be reimbursed, the positions themselves have no remuneration. Council members must remain members of the Association whilst serving on Council.
Council members need to be able to confidently use IT, as emails and online conferencing are a necessary form of communication. Also have sufficient time to spend on TRA work, attend online meetings at least twice a month, plus some in-person meetings every year. They will be happy to work as a team with Admin and Circle of Service members.

If you are interested in standing for Council these are the criteria:

  • be over 18 years of age
  • have been initiated into Reiki for a minimum of 2 years
  • be a member of TRA at time of election, and at some point in time have been a member of TRA for at least 2 years consecutively
  • agree to abide by and actively support the Statement of Identity of The Reiki Association
  • be initiated into Second Degree
  • have attended a previous TRA gathering in person or online
  • have attended online circles and/or webinars promoted by TRA
  • be prepared to make a short statement at the General Meeting outlining why they want the role and what they can offer to it
  • ensure circumstances do not exist which prevent directorship of a limited company

If you are interested in standing for council please ensure you log in as a member and

Janet Brown - Council member

Janet BrownJan Brown has been a Reiki Master in the Usui Shiki Ryoho tradition since 1998. Jan met Reiki in 1995 in Vermont while on a skiing holiday where she took Reiki I with Penelope Jewell. She subsequently trained as a master with Penelope. She is currently part of the circle of service for the TRA, answering the general enquiry line.

Jan moved with her husband to Wadhurst in East Sussex in 2015, to be beside her grandchildren, but lived for most of her life in Scotland. She is a qualified Complementary Therapist and ran her own therapy clinic for 10 years in Scotland. She taught for many years in various parts of Scotland before taking time out to become an artist.

Jan has previously served on the Reiki Association council as well as several other committees. (Angus Open Studios and Angus Complementary Therapists)

Jan is a passionate organic gardener and has a love of standing stones, history and reading. She is also a peace pipe carrier and cat lover.

Annette Cass - Council member

Annette CassI attended my first Gathering the year that we planted a tree in honour of Marilyn Shields (2004) and I was blown away by the energy and beauty of the event. I have attended nearly all Gathering’s at Buckland since then. The return to this special place this April coincided with my return to the Association~ a mild curiosity about old friends and what was new, transformed into my unexpected calling to join the splendid folk on Council!

My Reiki Journey: I learnt Reiki I with Liz Lyden in Jan 2003 when my husband was diagnosed with cancer. After he died it was easy to self treat on a daily basis whilst grieving, and I soon realised that Reiki was the gift he left me along with the cat who is purring next to me as I write this. As soon as I could I went on to learn Reiki II and it was through Reiki that I met my husband John Cass when he was organising a master candidate training for Phyllis and they chose to use my place! My own master training consisted of 3 years with Phyllis and then 3years with Paul Mitchell who initiated me as a master in 2013.

I have worked on sub groups within the Association in the past– so have helped organise events and training but never on council before. It feels that it is my time.

Current Personal: John and I live in the amazing Wye Valley and if you are quick you could come stay with us as we are now seeking to move to a new home.

So what do I bring to Council?- life experiences- skills? I have had a wonderful eclectic work-life dance. It continues to be joy-filled whilst simultaneously sharing other people’s deeper life issues. After working in F.E. Colleges, then Mencap, I escaped to Snowdonia in 1990 to set up a mountaineering business with my partner and have been self employed ever since. Renovating 2 properties and finally marketing the later as Snowonia Retreat, I enjoyed providing places for personal retreats combined with treatments on site. John and I then ran various Reiki happenings and Events including for Phyllis and later Paul’s Silent Retreats. Other skills: working in voluntary counselling organisations, team building in the outdoors….I still prefer to be outdoors then anywhere else. If there is a theme it is always about helping people to bring out the best in themselves- challenging themselves, healing themselves. Working with Change.

I have found myself often in a places of innovation and change…. And the planet is certainly throwing us some clear messages that we need to be pro-active now in aiding planetary change. I hope to bring a fresh set of eyes and personal maturity in service to the Association.

Claire Prendergast-Johnson - Council member

Claire Prendergast-JohnsonI was born and raised in Ireland and have been living in the UK since 2003.

I graduated with a bachelors degree in Social Policy and Politics from University College Dublin when I was 20 years of age and then moved into banking.   I quickly moved into management in the Irish retail bank that I was working in and I went on to study a Postgrad in Business and received many other finance related qualifications.   My career took me to London and within a year I began working in the City of London in an investment bank on the Global Markets trading desk where I remained until 2011.  Following this I ran my own business for 2 years.

Reiki came into my life in 2012.  My mother in law was being supported with Reiki while she battled a terminal illness and from the moment that I heard the word Reiki I was drawn to go for treatments and very quickly to learn.   I then had the privilege of supporting her with Reiki up until the point of her transition.  This experience led me to develop a deep understanding of and appreciation for the benefits of Reiki.    From that moment on I have been dedicated to the practice of Reiki and it underpins all that I do in my life and all that I am.     I now have 3 children and I support & nurture myself and my family with Reiki which is such a profound gift.

I was initiated as a Reiki Master in 2015 and I have a busy practice treating and teaching people in Sussex and London.  I also work with animals and in corporate settings.   As a member I have supported the Reiki Association by organising events in Sussex and London and by being a member of the monthly Webinar team.   It is an honour now to serve on Council.

Diane Tyrrell - Council member

Diane Tyrrell

I was born in Lord Brockets Hall, in Hertfordshire, little knowing the story behind this until later in life, but was raised in North London until I married, when we moved to East London due to the nature of my husband’s job. Then moving four year’s later to South Hornchurch Essex.

In London I studied business, accounting and management and my working life has been in senior administration being employed by Bovril, Boosey & Hawkes, IBM and finally working for the NHS. This is when I branched out into project management after taking a course in Leadership Management and finally ending up by taking a Teaching Degree with Greenwich University as, at the time, typewriters were being replaced by Computers and I was asked to teach the staff. Alongside this I was very interested in complementary therapies and my calling into Reiki was in 2001 when, after a treatment, I immediately wanted to learn this. I then took Reiki II in 2002 and four years later in 2006 was initiated as a Master after intensive study, and having, by then, a healing practice which served both the NHS and the wider community. In 2008 I had the opportunity to leave the NHS after 16 years and set up my own company in therapies and teaching after having learnt other complementary therapies which I now practice and teach.

I joined TRA in 2009 and have been part of the Grassroots team as well as serving on the Care Service since I joined which has been an integral part of my reiki life. I was recently accepted to become the Co-ordinator for the Care Service which I am enjoying very much, meeting such lovely likeminded people. I now feel it is my time to put more energies into the Reiki Association so am part of the Reiki Medic-Care group and am also now part of the Reiki for Animals team helping to build trust and acceptance with both veterinary practices and the community as I feel Reiki for Animals is much needed at this time with the way the planet is. At the last Gathering I was both humble and yet gratefully happy to be accepted onto Council and my aim is to serve the members in any way I can.

However, my true passion is healing which has become a huge part of my life and always will be. It has taught me well; true acceptance of what is and what will be, given with unconditional love to all those who need it. I regularly run Reiki shares from home and offer healing to those less fortunate like ex service people with Post Traumatic Stress, animal rescue centres and charities such as Alzheimer’s, Cancer and the Heart Foundation, which are all dear to my heart, by running events to raise funds for them. This is with no financial gain to myself.

I am so blessed that I have Reiki in my life and have found it to open up to beautiful experiences and to meeting such lovely, accepting, likeminded people who I am so happy to know. It has certainly helped during difficult times in my life both physically, mentally and emotionally for which I will always be grateful.

Ann Thatcher - Council member

Ann Thatcher

I realize it's about time I properly introduced myself. I became a member of the Reiki Association (TRA) in 2018, and during the 2021 Annual Gathering (held online), I felt a deep inner calling to step up and serve as a Council Member. Since then, my journey has been one of profound personal growth and self-awareness, guided by Reiki, as I work to support and lead the TRA community into the future.

Now in my third year on the Council, it has been an incredible honor to serve this vibrant community. I've truly loved connecting with our members, whether through online meetups or in-person gatherings. My mission continues to be making Reiki accessible and reaching far beyond visible borders to touch the wider world. I firmly believe that Reiki Love is exactly what we need right now.

Looking forward to continuing this journey with all of you!

Reiki
Reiki ('Ray-key') is Japanese for Universal Life Energy, and is also a word used to describe a system of natural healing. This tradition was founded by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication. It was introduced into the Western World by one of his students, Hawayo Takata, who gave us the system of Reiki in which TRA is rooted, Usui Shiki Ryoho.
We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us, and we experience a sense of well being.
There are many variations of Reiki systems now-a-days, but in essence Reiki treatments can help the body emotionally or spiritually. In accordance with advertising guidelines, it is not possible to list the wide range of conditions practitioners believe can be helped by Reiki so it is always good to talk to people who have benefited from Reiki in their lives. Reiki is a tradition that is open to any belief system.
The Reiki Association aims are to:
~ Encourage people to deepen their practice of the Art of Reiki.
~ Provide information about Reiki to members of the Association and the wider community.
~ Foster the Reiki community locally, nationally and internationally.
~ Encourage members to contribute to the decision making process of the Association.
~ Encourage professional standards of Reiki practice.
